Google update affecting SMEs

On the 21st April, Google will release an update that will result in an increased weighting being given to the mobile friendliness of websites. From this date onwards, users of Google will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimised for their devices.

If you are a small business owner and rely on your website for new business traffic, there are some steps you can take to see how this is likely to affect you:

  • Check your analytics account to see how much of your web traffic comes from Google as compared with other search engines
  • Then check how much of the Google traffic comes from smart / mobile / handheld devices
  • Next, test the mobile friendliness of your website using Google’s free mobile friendly testing tool [https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/?utm_source=wmc-blog&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=mobile-friendly ]. You just need your website’s URL for this test

You’ll then be in an informed position to decide whether you need to invest in making your website more versatile.
